Eleven graduates will receive their high school diplomas on June 5 at Madison Country Day School’s Commencement Ceremony.
Students in this class take a unique learning experience with them. These graduates have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, a two-year college preparatory curriculum at the only school in Dane County offering the program.
Madison Country Day School offers multiple educational pathways to students enrolled in its high school program. Classes and programs provide students with the opportunity to build critical thinking skills, learn with a global student community, and identify best match colleges and universities through an exceptional college counseling program providing one-to-one support.
After a two year accreditation process, Madison Country Day School became an IB World School in 2008-09. This year’s graduates make up the first class to have completed the two-year program.
“The past two years have been a rewarding experience as we watched our first IB class find success in IB courses,” Head of School Luke Felker said. “As the class of 2010 has learned, the IB curriculum leads not only to enhanced success in the classroom, but also to significant advantages in the college application process. In the next year and beyond, they will experience the benefits an IB education has for achievement in college.”
The IB program offers a similar level of factual knowledge when compared to Advanced Placement courses. However, it places more emphasis on critical thinking, essay writing, in-depth research, and learning through activities beyond the classroom.
“It’s designed to create an analytical student – one who considers subjects in-depth from a global perspective,” Felker said.
The program also enjoys broad appeal worldwide. Used by over 2,000 schools in 124 countries, it dovetails into Madison Country Day School’s international focus.
“Our vision is to help build global students,” Felker said. “This program, in addition to our current international curriculum in the lower and middle schools, is one more step in that direction.”
Madison Country Day School is an independent, non-sectarian college preparatory school offering classes in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Founded in 1997, MCDS is located in the town of Westport with a current enrollment of approximately 250 students.
